NIOS Explained: Admission, Courses, Eligibility, Exams & Benefits (2026 Guide)

Can’t attend regular school, or want to study at your own pace? NIOS is one of India’s most trusted options. This guide covers everything you need to know, in one place.

What Is NIOS?

NIOS stands for the National Institute of Open Schooling. It was formerly known as the National Open School (NOS) and was established in November 1989 as an autonomous institution under the National Policy on Education 1986, by the then Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education), Government of India.

A Government of India gazette notification gives NIOS the authority to examine and certify learners up to pre-degree level, whether in academic, technical, or vocational courses.

Is NIOS Recognized?

Yes. Per the official site, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) issued an equivalence for the NIOS Senior Secondary Certificate in 1991. That means it can be treated as equivalent to other boards’ Class 12 for higher education. Still, always confirm the requirements of the specific college, university, or job you’re targeting.

Vision and Mission

  • Vision: Sustainable, inclusive learning with universal and flexible access to quality school education and skill development.
  • Mission: Provide relevant, continuing, and holistic education up to pre-degree level through Open and Distance Learning (ODL), contribute to universal school education, and serve priority groups with equity and social justice.
